A 50th birthday on Lake Como: four days of celebration

A contemporary villa, dinner in Cernobbio, a boat tour followed by an afternoon by the pool, and a journey into the Swiss Alps: a celebration centred on friendship.

Some birthdays become an invitation to travel together. To step away from everyday commitments, bring close friends together and give them something that is often in short supply: time.

This was the inspiration behind a 50th birthday on Lake Como, celebrated with around thirty friends over four days of experiences. The stay brought together private gatherings, live music, afternoons on the water and an excursion across the Swiss border. At its heart was the birthday evening itself: a party at Gatto Nero, with the lake stretching below the terrace and three tenors providing the soundtrack to dinner.

A welcome at Villa Aurea

The celebrations began at Villa Aurea, the residence the hosts had chosen for their stay in Sala Comacina. Here, contemporary architecture offers a fresh perspective on Lake Como: interiors open towards the views, outdoor spaces invite guests to gather, and an infinity pool appears to merge with the water below. Overlooking the bay and Comacina Island, the villa creates a seamless connection between the house and its surroundings.

It was an intimate setting in which to welcome friends and begin the festivities. For the welcome party, a private chef prepared dinner at the villa, while flowers, candles and a welcome sign set the scene for the days ahead. Welcome bags added a personal touch to each guest’s arrival.

Background music left room for conversation and the first toasts. The coming days promised a variety of experiences, but that first evening had a simple purpose: to feel at home together in one of Italy’s most sought-after destinations.

Golf, wellness and a celebration at Gatto Nero

The birthday morning gave guests the freedom to enjoy different activities at their own pace. One group headed to Menaggio & Cadenabbia Golf Club for a round of eighteen holes. Founded in 1907, the club preserves a long British-inspired tradition, adding a sense of history to a morning on the course. The ladies, meanwhile, enjoyed a morning at the Grand Hotel Tremezzo’s T Spa, with massages, treatments and time to unwind in the infinity pool, whose edge seems to blend into the lake beyond. Two different ways to spend the hours before the party, each offering time to relax.

In the afternoon, Villa Aurea became the setting for preparations before everyone travelled to Gatto Nero restaurant in Cernobbio. Perched on the slopes of Monte Bisbino, the restaurant overlooks the southern basin of Lake Como. Its panoramic terrace and rooms overlooking the water offer a different perspective from the villas along the shore: here, the view opens out across the lake towards the mountains. Italian cuisine completes the experience.

The evening began with an aperitif on the veranda, accompanied by a live saxophonist. Cocktails, canapés and conversation welcomed guests into the most anticipated evening of the stay. Later, two long banquet tables on the upper terrace brought the friends together for dinner. Candles of varying heights, enclosed in glass cylinders, cast a warm glow along the tables, with the lake as their backdrop.

The music paid tribute to Italy. Between courses, three tenors performed a repertoire spanning genres and generations, from Libiamo to Nel blu dipinto di blu, from La donna è mobile to Con te partirò and That’s Amore. Their performances gave dinner its own rhythm, alternating moments of listening with lively conversation. In between, a selection of Italian classics and international songs provided a subtle accompaniment.

After dinner, guests returned to the veranda for one of the evening’s most personal moments: a surprise video created by friends who had been unable to attend, allowing them to be part of the celebration from afar. A live tiramisu-making demonstration followed, turning a classic Italian dessert into an experience to enjoy together. Everyone then gathered around the birthday guest for a toast as the tenors sang Happy Birthday.

The DJ set and open bar brought a new energy to the evening as guests took to the dance floor. From the aperitif to the party, each moment offered a different way to enjoy being together: over dinner, through the surprise of live performances, and on a dance floor shared with close friends.

Lake Como by boat and an afternoon at the Lido

The following day, the celebration moved from the terrace to the water. Departing from Tremezzina, guests spent two hours cruising on the lake, with a lunch of finger food, wine and a DJ set on board.

Exploring Lake Como from the water reveals another side of its landscape. Villa façades face the shoreline, gardens descend along the hills, and small villages unfold between landing stages and bell towers. The scenery becomes part of the experience as lunch stretches on, punctuated by conversation and fresh views.

Arrival at Lido di Cernobbio marked the beginning of a leisurely afternoon, with swimming, drinks and time to unwind. Following the previous evening’s dinner, the day offered a more informal way to spend time together while keeping the celebrations going.

From Lake Como to St. Moritz aboard the Bernina Express

On the final day, part of the group ventured beyond the lake, travelling to Tirano to board the Bernina Express to St. Moritz.

The scenery gradually changes as the train climbs from Valtellina into the Swiss Alps, passing valleys, high-altitude lakes and mountain slopes. The Bernina line, part of the Rhaetian Railway’s UNESCO World Heritage route, reaches 2,253 metres at Ospizio Bernina before continuing towards the Engadin. Here, the journey becomes an experience in itself, with the changing landscape unfolding beyond the windows.

In St. Moritz, lunch at Segelhaus, directly on the lakeshore, offered a pause before the return journey. After the days spent on Lake Como, the Engadin scenery added a final chapter to the stay: a different light, another lake and a new memory to share.

The journey back to Tirano and then Como brought four days centred on friendship to a close. Villa Aurea, the party at Gatto Nero, the boat tour and the Bernina journey had given each day its own character, turning a fiftieth birthday into a holiday among friends.
